While desperately searching for people to interview, I felt very scared, because most of my friends have often criticized my accent, so I didn't think that actually taping an interview with them would be the best option. For this reason, I thought that the best idea would be to interview a friend from Puerto Rico, because it would give a different point of view to my topic, and it would also serve as a chance to call my friends without it being procrastination. So, I called one of my closes friends.
She instantaneously picked up the phone and said, "Oh, you are alive? You haven't called me in a long time. How is life?" I felt relieved, like if I could actually feel free and tell her of all the pain that I had been going through in my personal life, but instead I immediately told her about my auto ethnography on studying in college dorms. I thought she would be particularly unique to this case due to the fact that she is going to a school 10 minutes from her house, so she lives at home with her parents. She agreed to letting my interview her without even thinking about it twice, and immediately began, "I am so frustrated, because in high school, I could start studying two or three days before the test. Here the minimum time that I can start studying is one week before the test, well that is if I want to succeed." After agreeing with her, because that is exactly how I feel, I went into the important topic. I asked her, "Where do you usually study?" Her response surprised me because she said that she studies in her room and the library, which are the two places where I cannot study. She then continued, "I feel very comfortable in the library because that is where I get focused and there are no disruptions." |
She then told me that she only studies for three to four hours a day, which surprised me because she also said, "I do a lot of extracurricular activities. I play tennis and I do a lot of community service, and I don't actually think that it takes time from my studies." I haven't had time at all since I have been here to do anything other than studying. This shocked me, because sometimes I miss my free time to participate in extracurricular activities.
I then asked her, "Do you do many all nighters? Do you go to sleep early?" She then told me that she actually pulls a lot of all nighters in order to study for her hard classes, but in order to help her with the "all nighters" she drinks a lot of coffee, which actually has no effect on me due to all the coffee that I was used to drinking before college. I then asked her, "What are your hardest classes in school?" She responded, "Precalculus is actually my hardest topic because many topics weren't covered in high school, and in college I am expected to know all of information." Then when I asked her how many credits she is taking, she said, " I am taking 18 credits, which is a very good number of credits." After my surprise to most of her reactions, I thanked her for taking her time to help me with my interview, and I said, "I love you, I'll see you soon." |
